One of Scotland’s most southerly distilleries is set to get a new lease on life after word surfaced today of its purchase by an Australian entrepreneur. The distillery, Bladnoch, was, at one time, considered one of this region’s top Lowland style single malts, but a long history of challenges since its founding in 1817 had forced it into a recent quasi-mothball state.
Bladnoch is being brought back to life by one David Prior, said to have made his fortune as a yogurt business owner. What he is getting with his purchase is a facility which will need “substantial investment” in the production facilities before “spirit flows again from the stills.” The last time distilling was done here was six years ago.
This distillery acquisition is said to come at a time where there is a resurgence of distilling in this part of Scotland. The number of working distilleries in the area is increasing from two ten years ago to eight now.
