Heaven Hill Grain To Glass Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey review

Tasting Notes

About:

A straight rye whiskey that’s part of a more “craft” oriented Heaven Hill whiskey project that sees the use of a unique corn seed varietal as part of the mash bill. Aged six years, bottled at a barrel strength of 123.2 proof without chill filtration and priced at $99.99.
Appearance:
The amber glow in this glass is to be noticed, showcasing nice viscosity and leg structure.
Nose:
The rye aromatic in this glass is unusual in that it seems a bit subdued for a 63% part of the mash bill—maybe the unique corn varietal is doing that, as there’s a play of vanilla sweetness as well at work. There’s a spark of coriander, a bit of oak, some maple candy, and a run of anise.
Palate:
A nice pop of black pepper, cinnamon, and vanilla is on the palate here, supported by an oak backbone. Other things to note here include a rich brown sugar callout, a kiss of orange, a bit of almonds, and a slight amount of fresh cherries.
Finish:
This finishes warm and bright, with a nice spicy and slightly sweet ending that lingers for quite a while.
Comments:
Heaven Hill Grain To Glass Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey is a rye whiskey that drinks in a more unusual non-rye type way. This is not a bad thing at all—it’s just different and to be enjoyed. It’s an excellent offering.
