What Do the SMWS Codes Mean?
Each SMWS bottle features a two-part numerical code. The first number represents the distillery, assigned in the order the Society first bottled a cask from that distillery. The second number indicates the specific cask from that distillery. For example, a code of 27.6 means it’s the sixth cask bottled from distillery number 27, which corresponds to Springbank.
In addition to single malt whiskies, the SMWS also bottles grain whiskies, rums, and American whiskies, denoted by prefixes “G”, “R”, and “B” respectively. This systematic approach not only catalogues the Society’s diverse offerings but also ensures that each bottle is appreciated for its unique contribution to the world of whisky.

The Story Behind the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS)
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) is one of the most influential independent bottlers and whisky clubs in the world. Established in Edinburgh in 1983, its story begins years earlier with a group of friends and a barrel of whisky. In the late 1970s, Pip Hills, a whisky enthusiast, decided to buy an entire cask of whisky directly from a distillery—a bold move at the time. Sharing the spoils with friends, Hills sparked a passion for single cask whisky that led to the founding of the SMWS.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Scotch Malt Whisky Society
What does the SMWS bottle labelling mean?
The SMWS uses a unique system to name its whiskies:
- Numbering: Each label has two numbers. The first identifies the distillery, and the second refers to the number of casks the Society has bottled from that distillery.
- Creative Names: Labels often feature whimsical or poetic phrases that capture the whisky’s essence.
- Detailed Information: Labels also include the whisky’s age, cask type, filling date, and the number of bottles produced.
Why is SMWS whisky bottled at cask strength?
SMWS bottlings are never diluted with water, meaning they retain their natural strength. This allows drinkers to tailor the experience by adding water to bring out flavours at their own pace. Cask strength bottling also preserves the whisky’s complexity, offering a more authentic and intense tasting experience.
Does the SMWS use chill filtration?
No, the SMWS avoids chill filtration, a process that removes tiny particles from whisky to prevent hazing. While it creates a clearer liquid, it also strips away flavour compounds. By rejecting chill filtration, the SMWS ensures the full depth of flavour remains intact.
How many casks does the SMWS hold?
The SMWS has one of the largest collections of single cask whiskies, with over 10,000 casks from more than 130 distilleries. This includes whiskies from well-known distilleries, smaller producers, and even closed distilleries.
How often does the SMWS release new whiskies?
New bottlings are released monthly, with around 20 single casks becoming available each time. These include a diverse mix of styles, distilleries, and flavour profiles.
Where can I find SMWS whiskies?
The SMWS operates exclusive members’ rooms in Edinburgh and London, where members can enjoy its bottlings. It also works with selected partner bars worldwide, allowing whisky lovers to experience its unique offerings wherever they are.
What makes SMWS tasting notes so distinctive?
Each whisky undergoes blind tasting by a panel of experts who decide on its readiness and quality without knowing details like age or distillery. The resulting tasting notes are crafted to be entertaining, descriptive, and entirely unique.
