Drake’s Virginia Black Whiskey Wants To Be The Coolest MGP Juice

It has glamour. It has swagger. It has soul. It is tied to Drake, a top tier recording artist. What am I talking about? The mysterious Virginia Black Decadent American Whiskey, distilled in Drake’s spare time as a side hobby just because he wanted to.

Oh, who am I kidding? This is MGP-sourced whiskey, plain and simple, that’s dressed up in a pretty little bottle. I swear, sometimes I need to drink whiskey while writing in order to numb myself to stuff like this I’m telling you about.

What you’ve got here is a “personally selected” collection of two, three and four-year old bourbon whiskies, focused on a high rye profile, that are blended and “finished with a decadent profile.” It is said to be mellowed to 40% ABV “to showcase the true essence of bourbon.” It also reportedly will bring a level of character, courtesy of the brand name, to bourbon that’s “long [been] absent” from the category.

Really? Really? I’m having shades of the Gold Bar gold finished whiskey again we wrote about a few weeks back. Because I’m really going to believe the likes of someone like Drake has his whiskey junk together in a way which makes the likes of Wild Turkey’s Jimmy Russell look like a pathetic amateur.

Give. Me. A. Break.

Getting back to this craptastic expression, it is actually a collaboration between the musician and Brent Hocking. This guy is known for having created the original DeLeòn Tequila and offering a “‘luxury with an edge’ approach to branding.” Hocking said of this new offering in a statement that it is “uniquely positioned to redefine American Whiskey, [and that] Virginia Black will engage enthusiasts irrespective of spirit preference or experience.”

Plans call for Drake’s Virginia Black whiskey, which is being distributed by Proximo Spirits, to be available at the beginning of May in California, New York and Nevada, followed by an international rollout. No immediate price point was given.

Excuse me now while I go drink something real.
