The rising tide of craft whiskey in the Lone Star State continues with the recent unveiling of an aged “Texas Whiskey” from boutique distillery Rio Brazos out of College Station, Texas. This particular operation says it is dedicated “to the use of locally sourced grains and simple, small-batch, pot-distillation for making premium whiskeys and bourbon.”Its newest offering, known as Boxcar Texas Whiskey, looks like it is being distilled on site in the distillery’s 100 gallon pot still and consists of a mash bill that includes corn and roasted barley malt. It is being aged in used bourbon barrels and has been bottled at 90 proof.
As far as pricing and availability go, expect to find this young whiskey in limited distribution around Texas. I did notice, for example, that the in-state liquor retailer Spec’s has it posted on its website for sale for a price of around $38 for a 750 ml bottle. Limited tasting notes describe Boxcar as having primary flavors of “honey, malt, and cinnamon.”
